Compare purchases without the sales pitch

Build a fair comparison around what matters to you, not the longest feature list.

What you’ll leave with

A comparison table, unanswered questions and a clearer shortlist.

Before you start

Write your budget in your own currency, the must-have features and what you can compromise on. Collect current details from manufacturers or retailers.

  1. Separate needs from nice-to-haves

Explain what you will actually use the item for. Ask which requirements are essential and which may not justify extra cost.

  2. Supply the evidence

Paste non-sensitive specifications or links from trusted sources. Ask it to distinguish supplied facts from assumptions.

  3. Compare the whole cost

Include delivery, consumables, subscriptions, repairs and returns. Check compatibility with equipment you already own.

  4. Keep the final decision yours

Verify current prices, warranty terms and stock with the seller. Read a range of independent reviews and consider keeping what you have.

A prompt to make your own

Compare [option A] and [option B] for [my use]. My maximum budget is [amount and currency]. My must-haves are [list]. Use only these supplied specifications: [details]. Make a table of trade-offs, total-cost questions and missing information. Say “not verified” where evidence is missing. Do not choose a winner without explaining the compromises.

Replace the square brackets. Leave out private information.

Pause and check

Make it a habit

Save a version of the prompt that worked for you. Next time, change the details and review the answer afresh. A familiar prompt can still produce a mistake.
